A founding partner of San Francisco-based landscape architecture firm Surfacedesign, James Lord is responsible for the design of many of the firm’s award-winning projects. Integrating sensitive environmental and cultural responses with the technical challenges of large and complex projects keeps Mr. Lord busy with travel, having completed projects in New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, China, and India. His recent endeavors include working with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy on the design of public spaces within San Francisco’s Presidio, the master planning of the Smithsonian Institute’s South Mall Campus and Quadrangle, and the ongoing master planning of Auckland International Airport in New Zealand. Mr. Lord lectures widely both at home and abroad about Surfacedesign’s work. He has also served as a guest critic at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, U.C. Berkeley, C.C.A, U.S.C., Ohio State, and the University of New South Wales in Australia. He has served on the Harvard Alumni Council since 2004. Mr. Lord received his MLA at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and his BArch at the University of California. |
