Jamie Phillips-LAEP Lecture

As a Principal of CMG Landscape Architecture, Jamie has participated over the past 10 years in many of the firm's largest and most complex open space projects around the Bay Area. She believes landscape architecture has a social and environmental responsibility, and her work is focused on the public realm. CMG's mission is to improve the social and ecological wellbeing of cities, and the firm has been exploring a collection of ideas that grow and evolve through their body of work. One idea that speaks directly to a theme of Empowerment is 'democratic public space', which relates to the role public space has in a democratic society. At the forefront of sea level rise resiliency, CMG partnered with UCB as part of the All Bay Collective team in the Resilient by Design: Bay Area Challenge. The ABC team's design, entitled 'Estuary Commons', references a common as both the process of governance and the spaces that bring people together; empowering communities to lead in the resilient design and stewardship of their neighborhoods. Jamie lectures frequently on the issues of sea level rise, public space, and ecology, and is currently co-teaching Ecological Factors in Urban Landscape Design with Kristina Hill and Nate Kauffman in UC Berkeley's LAEP Department.
